Anja Hotfilter

About me

Hello everybody!

I am Anja Hotfilter, 19 years old, from
Georgsmarienhuette in the northwestern
part of Germany.  Last May I passed the
exams for my Abitur (a-levels). At home I
lived with my parents and my older sister,
2 dogs and 3 cats. After I was confirmed in
2002 in my protestant Lutheran church I
started working as an honorary youth worker
in my parish. My spheres of action include
the work with children in the age between 6-10
and the work with our candidates of confirmation, who are aged between 12-14. In addition to
this I also helped as soon as there had been any other activities in the parish. During this work
I gained my first experiences in one of my hobbies, wheelchair basketball. Other hobbies of
mine are volleyball and other kinds of sport, reading books and meeting friends for a coffee.
Normally the volunteers of St.Clements church stay with the vicar but this year the (vicar)
Rachel Ross left the parish soon after I arrived. Now I am staying in a house together with two
British girls.
The first idea of staying a year abroad was formed in 2005 when my sister left to spend a year
in Sweden. But I did not keep the idea very long in my mind because I had to concentrate on
my school. In year 13 we were asked what we are going to do after our school. Studying?
Training for anything? I recognized I was not really sure what I would like to do the rest of my
life. So I thought again about doing a gap year to find out what I would like to do, to find my
faith, but also to take a deep breath before I start studying or something else. My brain just
needs a break. But on the other side I also did not want to accept that my hometown is the
whole world. I wanted to take a look beyond my own nose to see how life also could be. In our
school we heard about other countries, cultures and religions. For myself it was not enough to
hear about them I wanted to see them with my own eyes…that’s why I am here…
